Globalization is undoubtedly changing the world in ways that we may not fully comprehend. For the United States, the growth of international trade affects jobs and the environment, particularly in regions such as Southern California, where large ports and transportation corridors have been developed to accommodate the distribution of imported goods. More than 40% of all containerized imports that enter the U.S. come through the Ports of LA and Long Beach. The ships, trucks, trains, airplanes and equipment used to transport these goods within the state and eventually to stores across the country release thousands of tons of polluting emissions each year, burdening Californians with billions of dollars in health costs and heavily impacting the quality of life in communities within close proximity. More focus and attention is needed to address the environmental impacts, especially the health impacts of pollution from international trade and “goods movement”. THE Impact Project’s Goods Movement 101 training provides an overview of how the goods movement system operates and the type of impacts that goods movement has on community health. The training has been designed as a tool for community based organizations located in areas that are impacted by goods movement, and other groups with a vested interest in protecting public health and the environment from these impacts. The Goods Movement 101 training aims to offer knowledge, resources and understanding that will prepare training participants to meaningfully participate in efforts to reduce the harmful impacts of goods movement, and to work towards improving community health. Using the Goods Movement 101 Training The Goods Movement 101 training is divided into three 1.5 hour sessions. Session 1 provides an introduction to goods movement. Session 2 gives participants more information about the health impacts of goods movement. Session 3 offers an opportunity to present some of the ways in which training participants can take action and get involved in addressing the health and environmental impacts of goods movement pollution. A power point presentation, group activities and additional resources for facilitators and participants have been developed for each of the three sessions. Hard copies of all of the training materials can be found in the Goods Movement 101 binder, and electronic copies can be found on the accompanying CD. Templates and samples of documents and presentations are provided below as a guide for organizations facilitating the Goods Movement 101 training. It is the hope of THE Impact Project that organizations will adapt the materials provided for each session to address goods movement issues most relevant to training participants, and to synchronize with current actions and campaigns. The Goods Movement 101 training was developed by Jennifer Lucky, MPH student at UCLA’s School of Public Health, as a component of her summer field work in 2007. The project was advised and overseen by Andrea Hricko, Director of the Community Outreach & Education Program of the Environmental Health Sciences Department at USC, and Angelo Logan, Director of East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice. |
