Biostatistics Facility Core
Educational Support

Here we provide a brief summary of the education support provided by the Biostatistics Facility Core, broken into three sections: Seminars, Guidance of graduate students, and Community outreach and education.
Seminars - Dr. Gauderman has given several talks on the analysis of gene-smoking and gene-age interaction in lung cancer, in which both the results and methods of analysis were stressed. He has also given several talks on the statistical methods used to analyze lung function measures in the Children's Health Study. Dr. Berhane has given talks on methods for analyzing longitudinal data with application to lung function and air pollution, and a talk on analyzing multivariate survival data with application to breast cancer.
Guidance of graduate students - Dr. Gauderman has guided two students, John Morrison and Sylvia Tan, in master's thesis projects related to environmental health. After completing their degrees, both Mr. Morrison and Ms. Tan became members of the Biostatistics Facility Core and they continue to apply their statistical expertise to the area of environmental health. Dr. Gauderman is currently guiding another student on a master's thesis related to the effects of air pollution on lung development in children. Dr. Berhane has guided one student, Ms. Yu Fen Li, on a master's thesis investigating the relationship between environmental tobacco smoke and lung function, and he is currently guiding her on a Ph.D. thesis in the area of air pollution and respiratory health. Dr. Navidi, former Director of the Biostatistics Facility Core, guided a master's thesis project related to air pollution prior to his departure.
Community outreach and education - Dr. Gauderman has responded to two requests by KPCC radio in Pasadena to do shows on the topic of air pollution and children's respiratory health. In these two radio shows, Dr. Gauderman summarized results from the Children's Health Study and responded to listener's questions. Dr. Gauderman also served as a science fair judge at Francisco Bravo High School. Dr. Berhane worked with Ms. Hricko in the evaluation of the KICK Asthma L.A. program.
