The MBSPFC does not have the resources, from within its NIEHS Center Grant budget, to carry out large studies. Funding therefore comes from the overall study budget. However, the laboratory work is conducted within the MBSPFC lab, using MBSPFC equipment as appropriate. Additional technical personnel can be recruited to handle the added workload and/or provide specialized skills.

As before, not every project is handled this way: when a study co-investigator has his/her own laboratory and feels that the project would be more closely supervised, more cost effective, or more appropriate for this lab, there is no "requirement" that the work be done out of the MBSPFC. In particular, when the co-investigator is from a different institution, it may be in the best interests of the study to send samples to that institution rather than to do the work locally.
