Data collection from a large case-control interview study of adult-onset myeloid leukemia in Los Angeles County is complete, data are under analysis, and various manuscripts are in preparation. Interviews were conducted with over 1,100 personal or proxy respondents, and interview information is available on 414 cases of AML diagnosed from 1987-1994 and 414 individually matched neighborhood controls. Histologic subtyping of cases was done, using the French/American/British (FAB) classification scheme. Verification of exposures to radiographic x-ray examinations and to certain drugs were verified by a review of medical charts. Findings of an association of radiography with specific FAB subtypes of AML are provocative and have prompted us to launch a new study to confirm these findings and to initiate pilot studies to explore possible molecular genetic associations.
