| Background: |
Population-based studies
have received relatively little attention
from this Core, for good reason. Meaningful
population statistics for conditions as
uncommon as most forms of childhood cancer
require a large population base. CCG draws
from a very large population, but it is
hospital-based, not population-based. Some
research can be based on local populations,
such as Los Angeles County, and Dr. Bernstein
has been active in this area. |
All this is expected
to change over the next few years, when
the NCI establishes its National Network
for Research on Causes of Cancer in Children
(NNRCCC), which will be a national population-based
registry of childhood cancer, derived primarily
from the cooperative clinical trials groups
augmented by data from State and regional
cancer registries. The impact that this
Network is likely to have on the Childhood
Cancer Research Core is described in more
detail below. |
Demographic/descriptive
studies on defined populations include the
following:

| Title:
Feasibility Studies for A National Childhood
Cancer Registry |
Project A:
Record Linkage of CCG/POG Registrations
with LA County (CSP) Registrations |
Project B:
Record Linkage of CCG/POG Registrations
with SEER Registrations |
| Project C: Pilot Study
for Record Linkage of COG Registration and
Data for State and Local Registries |
Drs. Buckley and Bernstein have formed a
committee of experts in cancer registration,
including representatives from CDC and SEER,
to advise on the establishment of the proposed
National Network for Research on Causes of
Cancer in Children (NNRCCC). The charge of
the committee is to establish procedures for
record linkage and to define criteria for
the primary performance site of the NNRCCC.

Project A:
Patterns of Childhood Cancer Incidence in
LA County |
| Project B: Cancer Incidence
and Survival Among Children and Adolescents:
U.S. SEER Program 1975-1995 |
Dr. Bernstein was an
editor of and contributor to, and Dr. Buckley
a contributor to, a SEER monograph on childhood
cancer incidence, published in 1999. This
monograph provides the most comprehensive
compilation of incidence data for the U.S.
and includes commentaries on incidence trends,
survival and identified risk factors for
each of the main malignancies in childhood.
