Design and Statistical Methodology Research
Core |
| Future Aims
and Directions |
The incorporation of
our methodologic research activity into
the NIEHS Center has led to a general expansion
of our research on study design and analysis
methods, particularly focused on environmental
epidemiology, mainly along the lines of
our historical areas of expertise. In the
future, we expect to focus our efforts in
the following areas: |
- genetic susceptibility to environmental
agents,
- efficient designs for case-control studies
within cohorts, families, and general
populations,
- hybrid designs incorporating ecologic
comparisons,
- exposure measurement error,
- analysis methods for cancer studies
based on multistage carcinogenesis and
toxicokinetics.
|
In the past, our efforts
were somewhat hampered by the need to either
piggy-back our methodologic research on
epidemiologic grants or to devote considerable
effort to seeking separate funding. While
the latter is quite appropriate for research
efforts involving a substantial proportion
of an investigator's time, it makes it difficult
for us to explore new interactions arising
in the course of our other work. The NIEHS
Center has allowed us to spend our time
to support the development of new initiatives
in such areas. |
