Conference Updates and Follow-up
More than 550 participants attended each day from 16 states and 4 countries, and with many backgrounds: community and environmental organizations, academic institutions, labor unions, policy groups, nursing, teaching, and government. States represented: Maine, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Michigan, Kansas, Indiana, and Iowa. Countries represented: United States, Canada, Mexico and Spain. Your collaboration and input were fundamental to making this conference a successful achievement. Conference materials and follow-up: The Conference Program (PDF) and Resource Materials are posted on the website, www.TheImpactProject.org, in the “Conference 2007” section. The Goods Movement 101 Trainings are available as PDFs in the “Resources” section under “What is Goods Movement?” We will be working diligently during the next few months to create follow-up actions, networking and communication opportunities, and information-sharing. We will also be working to share the Presentations made by our speakers, panelists and resource persons. Select photos from the Conference are now available online. What was the purpose of the Conference? "Moving Forward" provided an opportunity to learn about the current health research related to air pollution and ports/goods movement, to hear from communities about health-related concerns and efforts related to ports and goods movement, and to work together to develop strategies on preventing and reducing those health impacts. (See Conference Objectives).
Community groups, environmental justice organizations, labor union members, school nurses, public health officials, researchers, scientists, elected officials, students, and those interested in the health impacts of trade, ports and goods movement.
When and where was the Conference? All day Friday, November 30th and Saturday, December 1st, 2007 at the Carson Community Center in Carson, CA. See Directions, Travel and Hotel Information.
How did participants register? The deadline for advance registration was 5:00pm (PST) on Friday, November 16, 2007. Advance registration guaranteed a hard-copy of the “Moving Forward” Conference Resource (now available online), which includes information and resources on various conference topics. Advanced registration also guarantees lunch on Friday and Saturday. Extended Registration was accepted online (see link below) until 12noon (PST) on Monday, November 26, 2007. Extended Registration does not guarantee lunch on Friday or Saturday nor a copy of the Conference Resource. Walk-ins were welcome on the day of the conference as space is available. "Moving Forward" was free, but registration is required.

What topics were covered at the "Moving Forward" Conference? Day 1: Friday, November 30, 2007 8:00am - 5:00pm Themes: Health Concerns, Latest Research Findings, and Successes/Challenges for Protecting Health Day 1 was sponsored by the Southern California Environmental Health Sciences Center (SCEHSC), supported by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS); the Children’s Environmental Health Center, supported by NIEHS and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA); the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (UCLA); the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation; the South Coast Air Quality Management District; the Panta Rhea Foundation; and the Trade, Health & Environment Impact Project, supported by The California Endowment. Day 1, Friday, November 30th focused on the latest research findings and community concerns about the health impacts of goods movement. A panel of scientists shared information about recent health studies, and community members shared their successes and challenges in their efforts to protect community health. There was also open microphone sessions to allow comment from conference participants, and breakout sessions for participants to meet and discuss the issues.
Day 2: Saturday, December 1, 2007 9:00am - 3:30pm Themes: Defining solutions and strategies for change, drafting a platform for action, next steps Day 2 was sponsored by the Trade, Health & Environment Impact Project, supported by The California Endowment; the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation; the Panta Rhea Foundation; and the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Day 2, Saturday, December 1st focused on building bridges, solutions and strategies for change. A panel of academic, labor, environmental, and community representatives will discuss the economic issues related to goods movement. During breakout sessions, conference participants had the opportunity to discuss topics such as outreach tools, bridging the gap between environmental, labor, and community groups, climate change, globalization, alternative technologies and strategies, and media strategy. Conference participants came together at the end of the day to develop an alternative vision for their communities, and ratify a platform and plan of action around goods movement-related environmental/ community health issues.
